The Keurig Cleaning Method You Won't Find In The Manual

We’ve been enjoying our new Keurig 2.0 for almost a full month now, and we are hooked!  Hot chocolate for the kids and hubby and coffee and tea for me, all on tap.  It’s awesome!

However, lately I was noticing black gunk coming out of the Keurig, even while we were only making hot water.  It didn’t look like coffee grounds, and it was more than a little gross.  What I discovered is that it was actually the dried residue of previous cups of coffee, hot chocolate and cappucino brewed with the machine.  The design of the brew basket actually traps remnants of the brewed drinks along the way.

I finally found a video explaining how to dismantle the brew basket and clean inside, but here’s the thing.  I couldn’t find anything about it on the Keurig website or in the manual.  I guess we were supposed to figure it out ourselves …?

So I made my own video explaining it.  Scroll down further for the written instructions with pictures.

How To Clean a Keurig 2.0 Brew Basket

  1. Unplug your Keurig Brewer (safety first!).20160125_14264320160125_142716
  2. Grasp either side of the brew basket (where the K-Cup goes) and pull up firmly.20160125_142729
  3. 20160125_142804 Press the tabs on either side of the brew basket.  The inner section will pop up.  Separate the two pieces completely.20160125_142815
  4. Now pull the third piece out of the brewer.  It will just slide right out.20160125_142844 20160125_142853
  5. Soak all three pieces in hot soapy water and scrub with a long bristle brush.  There are lots of nooks and crannies to get into, but make sure to keep your fingers away from the needle in the K-Cup holder section.  You can take this opportunity to clean out the needle itself with a paperclip.  Watch the video to see an easy way to access the needle.
  6. Rinse each piece well, dry them, and then place back into the Keurig 2.0 in the same order you removed them.  Easy peasy!

That’s all there is to it!

Now why couldn’t they have put these instructions in the manual?!
